Passing a Secure English Test is now Compulsory for UK student visa applicants:

According to the VFS website, from 12th August 2010, all Tier 4 General (adult) students who are using a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) issued from this date must be assessed to English language level B1 of the Common European Framework of Reference by passing a UK Border Agency-approved Secure English Language Test (SELT) before applying for a Tier 4 visa.

In simple English, IELTS is compulsory with a score of 4.0 in each module. Bowing to strong demands from within, the UK Home Office has finally set a clear requirement for English ability of potential student visa applicants. After a series of visa fee increases and letting bogus colleges proliferate, it appears they have decided to turn on the heat a bit more by forcing applicants to shell out an extra Rs. 7500 for the IELTS exam.
