FAQs

Common questions about studying in New Zealand.

Quick answers to the questions our counsellors hear most.

How long is the post-study work visa in New Zealand? +

NZ offers an Open Work Visa to graduates called the Post-Study Work Visa. If you studied for 2+ years, you get 3 years of open work rights. A 1–2 year qualification grants 1 year of work rights. Graduates must apply within 3 months of completing their studies.

Can I work while studying in New Zealand? +

Yes — students enrolled in a degree-level programme of 2+ years can work up to 20 hours per week during term time and full-time during scheduled holidays. This helps significantly with living costs. Your dependants can also work full-time if you are in a postgraduate programme.

Can my family come to New Zealand with me? +

Yes — spouses and children can accompany you to New Zealand. If you are in a postgraduate level programme, your partner can apply for an open work visa (full-time). For undergraduate programmes, partners can obtain a visitor visa. Children attend school freely as dependants of a student visa holder.

What is the minimum IELTS score required? +

For most NZ undergraduate programmes: IELTS 6.0 overall (no band below 5.5). For postgraduate: IELTS 6.5 overall (no band below 6.0). PTE Academic 50+ is widely accepted. Massey and Waikato also accept institutional English tests in some cases.

Is New Zealand cheaper than Australia or the UK? +

Generally yes — NZ tuition fees and living costs are lower than Australia's east coast cities or London. Cities like Dunedin, Hamilton, and Palmerston North offer significantly lower living costs than Auckland. Combined with part-time work rights, NZ is one of the most cost-effective English-speaking study destinations.

How does the path to New Zealand PR work? +

After graduation: Post-Study Work Visa → gain NZ work experience → apply for the Skilled Migrant Category (SMC) resident visa. NZ study and work experience earn extra points in SMC. Alternatively, an employer can sponsor you through the Accredited Employer Work Visa (AEWV). Total time from graduation to PR: typically 2–4 years.
