FAQs

Common questions about studying in the USA.

Quick answers to the questions our counsellors hear most.

What is OPT and STEM OPT? +

OPT (Optional Practical Training) allows F-1 students to work in the USA for 12 months after graduation in a field related to their degree. STEM graduates can apply for a 24-month STEM OPT extension — giving a total of 3 years of US work experience, significantly boosting H-1B lottery chances.

Can I work on campus while studying? +

Yes — F-1 students can work on campus up to 20 hours per week during term time and full-time during vacations. On-campus jobs include library, cafeteria, research assistant, and teaching assistant roles. Off-campus work requires CPT or OPT authorization.

What TOEFL / IELTS score do I need? +

Most US universities require TOEFL iBT 80–100 or IELTS 6.5–7.0. Top universities like MIT and Harvard require TOEFL 100+ or IELTS 7.0+. Some state universities have lower thresholds. GRE is typically required for Master's programmes in STEM and social sciences.

Can my family join me in the USA? +

Yes — your spouse and unmarried children under 21 can come on F-2 dependent visas. However, F-2 dependants are not permitted to work in the USA. Children can attend school on an F-2 visa. This is an important consideration for couples planning to study together.

Are scholarships available for Indian students? +

Yes — many US universities offer merit scholarships, tuition waivers, and graduate assistantships (TA/RA) that cover tuition fully plus a monthly stipend. State universities and lesser-known private universities are often generous with funding. Our counsellors identify scholarship-friendly universities for each profile.

What is the path from F-1 to US Green Card? +

After graduation: OPT / STEM OPT → employer-sponsored H-1B (lottery-based) → employer files EB-2 or EB-3 green card petition. Indian nationals typically face long green card queues due to per-country limits. EB-1 (extraordinary ability) bypasses the queue for highly accomplished professionals.
