FAQs

Common questions about the UK Skilled Worker Visa.

Quick answers to the questions our counsellors hear most.

What is the UK Skilled Worker Visa? +

The UK Skilled Worker Visa (formerly Tier 2 General) allows you to work in the UK for an approved employer. You need a job offer from a UK employer who holds a valid sponsor licence, and the role must meet minimum salary and skill requirements under the points-based system.

Do I need a job offer before applying for a UK work visa? +

Yes. You must have a confirmed job offer from a UK employer who is an approved sponsor. Your employer issues a Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS) which you need to complete your visa application. You cannot apply for a Skilled Worker Visa without a CoS reference number.

What is the minimum salary for a UK Skilled Worker Visa? +

The general minimum salary threshold is £26,200 per year or the going rate for your specific occupation code — whichever is higher. Some shortage occupation roles and new entrants may qualify at a lower threshold. Contact our experts for the current figures applicable to your role.

Can I bring my family to the UK on a Skilled Worker Visa? +

Yes. Your spouse or partner and children under 18 can apply as your dependants. Dependants can work in the UK without restriction in most roles. They apply separately but at the same time as your main visa application.

Can the UK Skilled Worker Visa lead to permanent residency? +

Yes. After 5 continuous years of lawful residence in the UK on eligible visas — including time on a Skilled Worker Visa — you can apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR), which is permanent settlement. After ILR you can apply for British citizenship.

Do I need IELTS for a UK Skilled Worker Visa? +

You need to demonstrate English language ability at B1 level or above. This can be done through an approved English language test (such as IELTS Life Skills B1), a degree taught in English, or being a national of a majority English-speaking country.
